Solar battery vs generator in Cebu: the real costs, compared.

A generator is cheaper to buy. A battery is cheaper to run, switches on by itself, makes no fumes, and with solar it lowers your bill every day. Here are both in pesos, with Cebu’s October 2026 fuel prices and your utility’s current rate.

The short answer

A generator is the cheaper thing to buy: about ₱25,000–₱52,000 for a 2–3 kVA inverter generator (KHM Megatools online listings, 16 Oct 2026), against ₱97,000 for a hybrid inverter and one battery at our list prices (equipment only). But at Cebu City’s October 2026 pump price, each kWh it makes for a fans-lights-fridge load costs about ₱86 in petrol (our estimate), roughly 6× VECO’s ₱14.89/kWh (VECO, Sep 2026).

A battery takes over in milliseconds, has no engine noise or exhaust, and costs about ₱16.54 per kWh to refill from the grid or ₱9.10 from solar. Without solar, a small generator usually stays the cheaper backup to own. Added to a solar system, a battery costs less than a generator over 10 years at 2026-like brownout levels in our model, and it is the only option that also cuts your bill. Keep a generator for multi-day typhoon outages, heavy tools or a home without a usable roof, or combine the two.

The price of one kilowatt-hour

Generator power costs about 6× what the grid charges.

Brownout loads are light, and light load is where small generators are least efficient. A battery’s cost per kWh barely moves with load.

Run a small inverter generator for a fan, the lights, the fridge and the Wi-Fi and it idles along at about a quarter of its rating, still burning about 0.46 litres an hour. At ₱92.63 a litre (Cebu City, 6–12 Oct 2026) that is about ₱43 an hour for half a kilowatt of power.

A battery burns no fuel while it waits (the inverter’s own standby use is not modelled here). Refilling it from the grid costs your normal rate plus about 10% in losses. Refilling it from rooftop solar costs only the export credit you would otherwise have earned, because exported power is credited at your utility’s generation charge, not the full rate. Our calculator takes that as 55% of the rate.

Solar + battery net of bill savings, on its own scale: below zero means savings have passed its price.

At about 6 brownout hours a month and 0.50 kW, the generator is the cheaper backup to own over 10 years, by ₱29,846. Battery-only backup does not catch up within 10 years (replacements are not modelled, so we don’t project further). Each generator kWh costs about ₱85.97 in fuel, against ₱16.54 to refill a battery from the grid. If you are getting solar anyway, the backup part (batteries plus the export credit given up) costs about ₱55,755 over 10 years, against the generator’s ₱73,982. The whole solar + battery system ends ₱422,203 ahead after bill savings; most of that comes from the panels, not the battery.

Why Cebu is asking in 2026

Frequent brownouts and dearer fuel, in the same year.

The two numbers that decide this comparison are both front-page issues in 2026: how often the power goes (30 red alerts by early September) and what a litre of fuel costs.

Rotations are usually short. Visayan Electric cut power across Metro Cebu in one-hour rotations during the May 2026 red alerts, and the distribution utilities get only about 30 minutes’ notice from the grid operator before manual load dropping (SunStar, 19 May 2026). Short, frequent and poorly announced outages favour equipment that reacts on its own.

Relief is not close. At a Cebu energy summit in October 2026, SunStar reported that Visayas supply is likely to stay tight through 2027, and Energy Secretary Garin said the solution is coming but late: “it will be a 2028” (SunStar, 12 Oct 2026).

Fuel rose faster than electricity. Cebu City petrol and diesel went up by about two-thirds in under eight months, while Cebu household rates rose about 19–45% in the year to September 2026. Per kWh they now sit at MECO ₱15.98 (Sep 2026), VECO ₱14.89 (Sep 2026), CEBECO I ₱15.24 (Sep 2026), CEBECO II about ₱15.91 (Sep 2026, ICSC tracker), CEBECO III about ₱15.08 (Oct 2026). Fuel, hour by hour

What a generator burns at the loads you’ll actually run.

Manufacturers publish fuel use at a quarter, half and full load. A brownout household rarely gets past a quarter.

Bigger is not cheaper at light loadA 6.5 kW diesel set running a 0.5 kW brownout load sits far below its quarter-load point, so its cost per kWh climbs well above the figures in the table. Even a 2.8 kVA inverter set at 0.5 kW costs about ₱100 per kWh (our estimate). Match the generator to the load you will really run, or use it to charge a battery.
What the table leaves outOil, spark plugs, air filters, the trip to the station and the fuel you keep in storage. Budget diesel sets in the ₱42,000–₱83,000 range are air-cooled and may use more fuel than the liquid-cooled Kubota quoted.
If you already own a generatorYou don’t have to choose. A hybrid system can use it for long outages while the battery handles everyday rotations; see using both below.

Backup duration and recharge

How long can each keep the lights on?

A generator runs as long as you keep feeding it. A battery is limited by its kWh, but refills itself from the panels.

Chapter 01

The everyday case in 2026

A battery barely notices a one-hour rotation.

At about 0.5 kW of essentials one 5.12 kWh battery runs for around 7 hours (estimate), so a one-hour rotation uses a small part of it. By the time a generator is wheeled out, fuelled and started, a good share of that hour has gone.

Battery
Switches over by itself and recharges once the grid returns or the sun comes up.
Generator
Set-up, cables and shutdown for every rotation.

One battery is plenty for rotations.

At your pace. Select any chapter.

Convenience and automation

What each one asks of you when the power cuts.

Illustrative timeline for a one-hour rotation at 6:02 p.m. The difference is less about money than about who has to do the work, every time.

With a battery

  1. The power cuts.

The hybrid inverter switches the backup circuits to the battery in milliseconds. Fans and Wi-Fi typically don’t notice.

  2. Dinner as usual.

Lights, fridge, router and TV run from the battery. Nothing to start, carry or refuel.

  3. The power returns.

The inverter goes back to the grid by itself. The battery refills from the grid, or from the panels the next morning.

Your part: nothing. Works the same when you’re asleep or away.

With a generator

  1. The power cuts.

The house goes dark. Find a flashlight.

  2. Set it up outside.

Wheel the generator out, more than 6 m from windows, doors and vents. Check the oil and fuel.

  3. Start and connect.

Pull-start it, then run extension cords or flip a changeover switch. The fridge and router come back.

  4. The power returns.

Switch back, shut it down, let it cool, refuel for next time.

Your part: every step, in the dark, in the rain, every rotation.

Automatic generators exist, but they need three things: an electric-start set, an auto-start controller, and a transfer switch that keeps generator power from feeding back into the utility line. Single-phase transfer switches were listed at ₱3,540–₱4,850 (sold out) and a three-phase unit at ₱34,150 (Electx, 16 Oct 2026), before installation by a licensed electrician.

Battery switch-over happens in milliseconds, so lights, fans and Wi-Fi typically don’t notice. Deye does not publish a guaranteed transfer time, so we still suggest a small UPS for a desktop PC. Only the circuits on the inverter’s backup output stay on, not the whole house; see how battery backup circuits are set up.

Noise, fumes and maintenance

The costs that don’t show up on a receipt.

Never run a generator indoors, in a garage or under the house

Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which you cannot see or smell. The US CDC says to run a generator outdoors more than 20 feet (about 6 metres) from windows, doors and vents, never in a garage even with the door open, and to keep a battery-powered CO alarm near where people sleep. In November 2020 the Department of Health in Bicol reported three deaths and five people hospitalised from generator fumes during typhoon blackouts in Albay, blamed incorrect use and advised against running generator sets in enclosed spaces (GMA News, 15 Nov 2020). Carbon monoxide is also one of the pollutants covered by the WHO’s 2010 indoor air-quality guidelines.

Noise

A small inverter generator measures about 53 dB(A) at a quarter load from 7 metres (Honda EU22i), and up to 65 dB(A) at full load (Yamaha EF2200iS). Enclosed diesel sets are around 66–68 dB(A) at 7 metres. Open-frame sets have no muffler enclosure and are generally louder; we found no published 7 m figure for the models checked. Every 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud.

A battery has no engine. Deye lists its 5–6 kW hybrids below 30 dB and the 8 kW below 45 dB, without saying how that was measured, so treat it as fan hum rather than a like-for-like figure.

Generator upkeep

Honda’s schedule for its small inverter generator: change the oil after the first month or 20 hours, then every 6 months or 100 hours, whichever comes first, even if it barely runs. Clean the air filter every 3 months or 50 hours; replace the spark plug every year or 200 hours.

Small petrol engines are certified for emissions durability over a few hundred to 1,000 hours. Heavy brownout use can reach that in a few years.

Battery upkeep

No oil, filters or fuel. Keep the inverter’s vents clear, mount it shaded and above flood level, and call on our after-sales support if anything looks off.

Batteries age with use. Replacement is not in our comparison, and we don’t quote cycle life until your exact battery model is on the proposal; warranty terms are confirmed in your proposal.

An honest answer

When a generator still makes sense.

A battery is not the right answer for every home. These are the cases where a generator, alone or alongside a battery, earns its place.

01

Long typhoon outages

Days without power, cloudy skies and fuel on hand: a generator just keeps going. Pair it with a hybrid inverter so the generator recharges the battery instead of running all night.

02

Heavy or tool loads

Welding machines, big pumps, compressors and workshop tools can exceed what a single-phase hybrid and a couple of batteries deliver. Deye hybrids handle twice their rating for only 10 seconds.

03

No usable roof

Renting, a shaded or failing roof, or no space for panels: without solar, a battery can only refill from the grid, which weakens its case. See whether your roof suits solar.

04

Backup without solar

If you are not getting panels, a ₱25,000–₱52,000 inverter generator kept outdoors is usually the cheaper backup to own in our model, even at 2026-like brownout levels, and clearly so if outages are rare. Check it in the tool with “Battery only”.

Using both
Illustration: in a night storm outage a generator in the yard feeds the house's hybrid inverter while the wall battery carries the backup circuits.
A generator wired to the hybrid inverter’s generator input runs the backup circuits and recharges the battery in a long outage.
  • Generator power
  • Battery backup
Illustration

Combined backup: battery for the everyday, generator for the long haul

Deye’s manual for the SUN-5K/6K-SG04LP1 describes three sets of AC terminals: grid, backup load and a generator input. With a generator on that input the inverter can run your backup circuits and charge the battery from the generator, and it can start a suitable electric-start generator through its dry contacts.

That changes how a generator is used. Instead of idling all evening at about a quarter of its rating, it can run for a shorter spell at a healthier load to refill the battery, then switch off while the battery carries the quiet hours.

Compatibility depends on the generator’s size, output and wiring, so we confirm it at the site assessment. If you already have grid-tie solar, adding a battery to an existing system follows a different path.

01How much does it cost to run a generator per kWh in the Philippines?

At Cebu City’s common pump prices for 6–12 October 2026 (₱92.63/L petrol, ₱94.70/L diesel, DOE), a small (about 2 kVA) inverter generator powering half a kilowatt of essentials burns roughly ₱86 of petrol for every kWh, about 6 times the grid. A diesel set at a quarter of its rating costs about ₱82 per kWh, and an open-frame petrol set more (about ₱111, our estimate). Grid power is ₱14.89/kWh (VECO, Sep 2026).

These are our estimates from manufacturers’ fuel-use figures, before oil changes and spare parts. Small generators are least efficient at the light loads a brownout usually brings, and a bigger set running the same light load costs more per kWh, not less.

02Isn’t a generator much cheaper than a solar battery?

To buy, yes. Online listings on 16 October 2026 put a 2–3 kVA inverter generator at about ₱25,000–₱52,000, while a hybrid inverter and one 5.12 kWh battery come to ₱97,000 at our list prices (equipment only, installation not included), or ₱52,000 per battery when the hybrid inverter is already part of a solar system.

To run, no: every generator kWh costs several times a grid kWh in fuel. As backup on its own, though, a small inverter generator usually stays cheaper to own: in our model at about 6 brownout hours a month and 0.5 kW, a ₱38,500 set costs about ₱73,982 over 10 years with fuel, against ₱103,828 for battery-only backup (before its installation). A battery pulls ahead when it is added to a solar system: its extra cost is the battery plus a little export credit, about ₱55,755 over the same 10 years, and the panels cut your bill on top. These are estimates; the comparison tool on this page runs your own numbers.

03Which is more reliable during a typhoon, a generator or a solar battery?

For outages that last days, a generator, as long as you have fuel and can run it safely outdoors. A battery on its own runs out on the first night and only refills when the grid returns. With solar panels, the battery refills on any day with decent sun, so essentials can run by day from the panels and through part of the night from the battery.

After Typhoon Tino in November 2025, about 7% of Visayan Electric customers were still without power on day five. If that worries you most, combine solar and a battery for everyday brownouts with a generator for the rare long outage.

04Can I use a generator and solar together?

Yes. Deye’s single-phase hybrid inverters, such as the SUN-5K/6K-SG04LP1 we install, have a separate generator input, and Deye lists support for storing energy from a generator, so a generator can run your backup circuits and recharge the battery during a long outage. Some set-ups can also start a generator automatically through the inverter’s dry contacts, if the generator has an electric start.

Whether your particular generator works with it depends on its size, output quality and wiring, so we check compatibility at the site assessment rather than promise it up front.

05Can a solar battery run my aircon during a brownout?

Yes, within limits. A 1 HP inverter aircon averages roughly 0.4–0.6 kW through a night, so with your essentials one battery lasts about 3½–4½ hours. We suggest two batteries whenever an aircon is on the backup circuit, for both runtime and power: we plan on about 2.6 kW of continuous power per battery (a typical 50 A module; your battery’s datasheet is confirmed in the proposal), which leaves little headroom for a compressor starting up.

Only the circuits wired to the inverter’s backup output stay on, so the aircon has to be on that circuit.

06Can I run a generator in the garage with the door open?

No. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say never to use a generator inside a home or garage, even with doors and windows open, and to run it outdoors more than 20 feet (about 6 metres) from windows, doors and vents, with a battery-powered carbon monoxide alarm inside.

The Department of Health gives the same message at home: in November 2020 DOH Bicol reported three deaths and five people hospitalised from generator fumes during typhoon blackouts in Albay, blamed incorrect use and advised against running generator sets in enclosed spaces (GMA News, 15 Nov 2020).

07Is a ‘solar generator’ the same as a home solar battery?

Not quite. In Philippine shops a “solar generator” usually means a portable power station: a battery box with sockets that you charge from a small folding panel or the wall and plug appliances into. It is handy for phones, a fan or a router.

A home solar battery is wired into your house through a hybrid inverter. It switches your backup circuits over automatically when the power cuts, recharges from rooftop panels, and also lowers your bill when there is no brownout. This page compares that kind of system with a fuel generator.

08How long will a solar battery last in a brownout?

About 7 hours per 5.12 kWh battery at roughly 0.5 kW of essentials: fans, lights, fridge, Wi-Fi and TV. We plan on 3.69 kWh delivered per battery (80% usable × 90% conversion), which is cautious. That easily covers Cebu’s usual one-hour rotations, and a long evening outage of several hours at essentials-only load.

If the outage outlasts the battery, the panels refill it the next sunny day; a generator on the inverter’s generator input can top it up in a long outage.
